Christmas in Bangkok: 399 Baht Mangkorn Seafood BBQ Buffet

The BEST Christmas Dinner I have ever been to in Bangkok is not the luxurious and classy rooftop restaurants but this authentic and local, Mangkorn BBQ Seafood Buffet that only cost me 399 Baht, eat-all-I-can for 90 mins, with free flow beer/drinks and ice cream!

Love the lychee flavoured ice cream by the way. Had to break my diet regime to try it.

Went there earlier at about 5pm to avoid the crowd and the queue. Yes you will have to queue at around 6/7pm when the crowd starts to flood in. If you are bored of just travelling to tourist attractions and food places where you get mercilessly slashed by the prices there, try Mangkorn Seafood BBQ Buffet! Good price, good variety of seafood, just probably little warm because there is no air con, but very authentic and local! Worthed every penny.

I chose to stay at Novotel Hotel in Siam Area because it's near the Siam BTS Skytrain Station. Super convenient for me to travel wherever I want to. I went to Mangkorn Seafood on my 1st night in Bangkok, as advised by friends in Bangkok, to take the train to Phra Ram 9 and take a 17 mins cab ride to the restaurant.

Another way would be to Huai Khwang MRT station and take a 10 mins cab ride in. Try not to bring too many valuables with you because you will realise that the restaurant is actually quite outside of town. OR take train to Victory Monument and take a taxi from there. There are many alternatives.

The best mode of transport to this restaurant will still be by taxi. So get a taxi with meter. ALWAYS ASK THE UNCLE FOR METER, especially if you're going in the night.

For 399 Baht you get countless variety of seafood, from crabs to prawns, from mussels to the entire fish, YES I MEAN THE ENTIRE FISH, not cut or etc. You get to choose the fish like the wet market in Singapore and BBQ it on the spot

The prawns here are just ridiculously big. You don't even need to do prawning just to get those kind of prawns, and you can effortlessly eat countless of prawns in that 1 hour 30 mins. When you reached the restaurant, you will be ushered in to your seats and they will bring the charcoals, the grill and everything for you. Be careful it's really hot. Another side note, your seafood gets CHAO-TAR (means bbq-ed) very easily. So make are you don't put everything on the grill.

I didn't lie about the fish. Look at that - for 399 Baht. You tell me worth it a not.

Yes you have bamboo shoots too, and many different kinds of shells

Keep the aluminium foil after you BBQ the fish! It will come in handy when you are bbq-ing the other seafood, especially the ones with shells. This is what I learnt from the locals there.

Squids & Sotongs the size of your feet - ALL AT 399 Baht

I will never look at seafood in Singapore the same way again.

For 399 Baht, you get prawns that are larger than your hand. And they have crabs too! Although I kind of had a hard time trying to eat it but it was a good experience. It's not Sri Lanka Crabs, but good enough. So don't expect to cook Singapore's chilli crabs there.

There are cooked food there too, like fried rice and spicy squids, not much of a variety but good enough to match your BBQ Seafood. You can mix and match your own sauces, or make your own salads as appetisers.

They have different kind of meat too, some of them are super fattening and sinful. But they are seasoned so it was really good. Just for your cheat day.

In addition, don't take too much just because you're excited because if you can't finish your meal on time, they will actually charge 4 Baht for every minute after and 120 Baht for half an hour late. AND 100 Baht for food wastage. It's not a lot of money but still, take what you can eat.

East 8 New York Fusion Tapas + Bar

Looking for a light meal and somewhere to drink and chill with your love or friends? East 8 Tapas Bar is one of the top choices! Here is the blog post I promised on my experience at East 8. I was surprised that Mr C. made the effort to research before he came to this place because he ordered without me having to ponder over the menu. I love how my meals are taken care of every time I'm out with him.

It was just one chilly night when Mr C decided to bring me there because I said I wasn't very hungry but he knows I'm fickle-minded with the food I eat. Although the price is on the high side at East 8, but their tapas never disappoint. The place was not difficult to find, there are indoor and outdoor areas. We took the outdoor area because it was really cold after the heavy rain. The lighting was not so good for photography but it was perfect ambience for the both of us.

Melting Pork Slider

Juicy braised pork cheek with melted gruyère cheese, grain mustard, and tomatoes. I call it the mini hamburger. Yes, the pork was melting inside my mouth when I had my first bite. The taste was heavenly!

Ham & Cheese

Buffalo mozzarella cheese, prosciutto ham topped with black truffle mayo.  Very delicious combination, it was a party in my mouth.

Portobello Fries
Crispy truffle portobello mushroom fries with roasted garlic aioli. I asked for extra mayo because eating it alone but many can get a bit too "mushroomy. But I love it not because I'm a mushroom fan but because it's so special and crispy!

Soy Yuzu Beef
Soy yuzu infused torched sliced Argentine tenderloin. This was the highlight of the night. The beef literally melted inside my mouth. I'm not really good with descriptions but it did MELT. It wasn't too chewy like some other beef I ate at other places, you get so tired of trying to chew everything but it was just nice. While I'm typing this, I'm already thinking when is my next visit. THIS IS A MUST TRY. (Secretly inside me, I also loved the salad they placed beside the beef. HAHA. )

Molten Peanut Butter and Chocolate
Molten lava peanut butter & dark chocolate cake, French vanilla ice cream. At first, I was a little skeptical about Mr C. ordering this because I'm really not a fan of peanut butter. But it turns out to be very pleasant. When you cut the cake, you can literally see the peanut butter and melted chocolate flowing out of it. It was really rich. However, I would like it better if there wasn't too much of the peanut butter and chocolate but more of the cake itself so it won't be too overwhelming.

Overall it was a really good experience, the people there are also really attentive to our needs. I would love to head back to try the other tapas on the menu although it was pricey. The next visit I would bring my friends along for drinks or even a simple date with Mr C.!

5 Reasons Why Cafe-hopping is One of the Best Things to do in Singapore

Many of you had requested me to do a summary of the cafes I have went to, the information & address of these cafes, recommendations of the food you should order and etc... so this post is dedicated for you guys!

1. GREAT BONDING WITH FRIENDS, YOUR PARTNER & FAMILY

If you've been following my instagram @miyukixt you will realise I have this tendency to cafe-hop everytime I meet up with my girlfriends, my boyfee, my cliques or even for family bonding. I cannot say I'm an absolute foodie when it comes to knowing where are the good food in Singapore, but I'm definitely an enthusiast! Whenever it comes to planning for dates and outings, I will definitely include research for good food places, irregardless of hawker food, fine-dining or which in this case, unique cafes in Singapore. And yes, I did my homework before I went these places. And behind all these beautiful photos, are my bunch of really enthusiastic friends, boyfee and family who are more than happy to visit these places with me!

It's so easy to find a good cafe in Singapore, you google and there are tons of articles and blogs featuring the popular cafes and the newly-opened ones! Don't sit around and wait for people to plan things, sometimes we have to take the initiative to do the job, and you'll never know, it may be an extra push to your friendship or even relationship after cafe-hopping!

2. A GOOD CHOICE FOR A FIRST DATE

If you're trying to plan a first date with a girl and you don't know where to bring her, I suggest a cafe too because one, you won't look cheap, (not that hawker food is not nice but you'll never know if your partner likes it or not), two, both of you can have a nice and in-depth chat over the coffee to find out if both of you are suitable for each other, three, you do not exactly need to have a hole in your pocket just to give your first date a memorable experience, let the cafe ambience do its job.

3. RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS FOR PLACES TO GO WITH YOUR LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP PARTNER

Sometimes your long term relationship gets dry when both of you had been visiting the usual places in Singapore, a bit too often. And the motivation between both of you taking the initiative to meet each other is declining. Every time both of you meet, one of you will ask (usually the guy),"Eh, where you want to go?" or "What you want to eat?" And the girl replies, "Anything lor.", "You decide.", "I don't know."

Take this suggestion into consideration, to plan every outing and research on them TOGETHER so both of you will look forward to your next off days together and stop asking each other monotonous questions again and again. It sucks to hear the repetitive questions and answers from each other and soon, some of us - apparently many of us, would decide that this relationship is boring.

Add a little spice to your weekly dates by going to an unique cafe for the upcoming date! After that you guys can take pictures together, take a stroll by the street of cafes and tell your partner,"This cafe is interesting! We can come next week." And there you go, your next date planned!

Somehow I think that you won't run out of cafes to go since many, yes MANY, new cafes are sprouting out recently. And if you are sick of eating cafe food, you can always try others like researching for good hawker food in Singapore & other restaurants. You will be surprised how much good food you can find in Singapore. This is definitely one of my boyfee and I's favourite past time in our 6 years together. FOOD EXPLORATION TOGETHER!

4. EXQUISITE FOOD & GOOD AMBIENCE TO SIT & CHILL AFTER A HECTIC WEEK

Cafe-hopping is one of the best past time in Singapore, at least for me, because I get to sit and chill with my love ones in a comfortable environment, indulge in really exquisite food and satisfy my craving for a good cup of coffee. All my favourite things in one place!

Sometimes, your work is taking a toll for you, especially to my family and boyfee, so sometimes weekends or free off days during the weekdays are their special privileged days. I do not want to waste such precious time away, where I can actually plan a good outing for them to relax and chat over a good meal about their week, so there - my research and well-prepared list of cafes comes in very handy. I would usually plan a brunch outing so that they would not need to wake up so early since waking up early for work is already a chore, so they should be rewarded with extra hours of sleep on their off days! And yes, plus point again, cafes usually offer brunch menus! SO DON'T BE WORRIED if you think you can't eat your favourite big breakfast because you missed the morning birds benefit!

5. GETTING A PERFECT #OOTD PICTURE FOR YOUR INSTAGRAM

THESE PLACES  USUALLY HAVE PERFECT #OOTD BACKGROUNDS. That's the bonus! HAHA! These cafes are usually located at places with really nice backgrounds, so you're spoilt with choices for where you want to take your pictures at. Trust me, you and your friends can sometimes spent up to an hour taking pictures. Because I've been through it! So much bonding with my friends, even with my boyfee, while taking pictures and you get to keep these memories for life and add some colours to your instagram!

And here are some cafes I went to, not all, but recommended for a start up if you're not a cafe-hopper! (picked from my instagram!)
